Celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners

07 Aug 2023

Congratulations! The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner Board of Australia (the Board) is celebrating the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners and Health Workers as part of this year’s National Day of Recognition for the profession.

Held on the 7 August each year, the theme for this year’s National Day of Recognition is recognising the achievements and evolution of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner workforce.

Board Chair, Renee Owen, takes this day to reflect on the hard work of Health Practitioners and Health Workers who dedicate their time to improving health outcomes for our communities.

‘Today gives us a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the importance of our work. Our participation in the health workforce is crucial to addressing national health priorities like Closing the Gap.

‘I call on all health services to get better informed about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner and Health Worker workforce, this will help to ensure culturally safe services and better health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples,’ said Ms Owen.

For an example of someone working hard to improve not only health outcomes but the way in which our professions are integrated into main stream health services, check out the recent story about Gunai Kurnai woman, Ashleigh Munro in our newsletter.

You can head over to the National Association of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Health Practitioners (NAATSIHWP) website for more stories about our workforce.
